El pajarito de tela que cambió mi destino | The cloth bird that changed my destiny

Empecé mi camino en la costura desde los veintitantos años. Cosía cortinas, cojines, fundas, manteles, servilletas de tela y así, cosas sencillas. Un día, a los 36 años, decidí que quería hacer unos juguetes de tela. Busqué en internet y encontré el patrón de un pajarito que me gustó. Lo cosí con retazos de tela que antes se vendían en la tienda más conocida de telas en Puebla, La Parisina. Esto despertó mi curiosidad por las formas en tres dimensiones logradas con costura y tela. Y así se plantó la semilla que después marcaría mi vida con el nacimiento de Pichoniza.

Esta anécdota tiene más de una década. Este post marca la fecha de aquello. En vez de borrarlo, lo estoy reescribiendo en 2025.

La historia detrás del patrón del pajarito

En 2008, Michael Fulkerson, profesor de costura en la tienda Spool Sewing (Filadelfia), diseñó el patrón como un juguete para gatos en 3D, y la tienda lo publicó gratis en su blog. Para promocionar las clases, creó un móvil con varios de sus pájaros. La figura tuvo tal éxito que se viralizó. Muchas personas lo utilizaron para adornos navideños, proyectos benéficos y crearon cientos de versiones con ligeras variantes. Medios como Design*Sponge y Apartment Therapy lo destacaron. 

Hubo quien empezó a vender el patrón sin dar crédito al autor y cuando éste se dio cuenta, ya no lo podía detener. Al final lo tomó como un ejercicio de desapego, lo concibió como "Su legado para el mundo" y lo dejó ir. Spool cerró y el patrón se perdió con su blog (aunque sobrevive en cachés de Pinterest).

Yo obtuve el patrón en Design*Sponge, que también dejó de existir. Pero más allá de los momentos no gratos vividos por el autor, lo que vale es su creatividad y que haya tenido la gentileza de donarlo.

¿Tienes ganas de aprender a coser? Anímate y saca a la persona creativa que hay en ti. Este patrón es súper recomendable si quieres iniciarte en la costura. Se puede hacer a mano y sólo necesitas cachitos de tela, aguja, hilo, tijeras y un poco de relleno, como el de las almohadas. ¿Qué tal si terminas construyendo tus propios diseños, como a mí me pasó?

I started sewing in my early twenties. I sewed curtains, cushions, covers, tablecloths, cloth napkins and so on, simple things. One day, at the age of 36, I decided I wanted to make some fabric toys. I looked on the internet and found a pattern of a little bird that I liked. I sewed it with scraps of fabric that used to be sold in the best known fabric shop in Puebla, La Parisina. This aroused my curiosity for the three-dimensional forms achieved with sewing and fabric. And so the seed was planted that would later mark my life with the birth of Pichoniza.

This anecdote is more than a decade old. This post marks the date of that. Instead of deleting it, I am rewriting it in 2025.

I got the pattern from Design*Sponge, which also went out of business. But beyond the unpleasant moments experienced by the author, what is worth is his creativity and the fact that he was kind enough to donate it.

Do you want to learn how to sew? Cheer up and bring out the creative person in you. This pattern is highly recommended if you want to get started in sewing. It can be done by hand and you only need pieces of cloth, needle, thread, scissors and a bit of stuffing, like the pillow stuffing. What if you end up making your own designs, like I did?
